First Greek Seagrass Forum
The first Seagrass Forum was organised by the ‘Greek Islands Seagrass Alliance (GISA)’ project (link in the comments), a project run by Cyclades Preservation Fund (CPF), Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR – Institute of Oceanography), HSPN – Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature, Ionian Environment Foundation (IEF), Argosaronic Environment Foundation (AEF), Aenaos Thalassa (AT).
Eugenia Apostolaki presented the work of the Seagrass Ecology Lab @HCMR and its collaborators over the past decade to assess the contribution of seagrass ecosystems to meeting the climate and biodiversity goals in Greece. Eugenia showed that the potential management actions to protect seagrass meadows of the South Aegean alone could achieve up to 13% of the national 2030 target of 1,154 kt CO2 eq. in additional removals. Now, during the Life LULUCF Atlas, the Greek partners aim to develop the roadmap for including the restoration of seagrass in the National GHG Inventories of Greece, building on the seagrass restoration work done in Greece.
